Hello, my name is Roy Sanders and I am the archaic golfer. The reason I chose the word “archaic” is because it means old fashioned. I definitely love old-fashioned things. I grew up in the 60s and I remember watching cartoons on Saturday morning on our black-and-white TV. My favorite was Deputy Dog, Mighty Mouse, Tom and Jerry, Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny and Johnny Quest! I also loved the Three Stooges, Andy Williams, Red Skeleton, Lawrence Welk and many other shows that were the joy of my childhood, watching with my family on a black-and-white TV. I’ll never forget when one of our closest friends gave us our first color TV! It was unreal seeing color TV! I also remember in grade school watching the Apollo missions at school on a black-and-white TV. I love rotary phones, and the fact that the only time you could catch someone on the phone was if they were at home or at work. I still remember lots of phone numbers because I dialed them thousands of times! No 24/7 phone calling, emails, text or computers. It was a slower time where “in person” conversation and friendships were the most important things we had. I also remember my grandfather, William Jasper McNamee. Affectionately known by his friends as Jack and by all his grandchildren as granddaddy. My granddaddy introduced me to golf in our backyard in 1965 when I was six years old. I grew up playing with persimmon Arnold Palmer Woods, and Wilson staff irons. I still play with Wilson Staff Blades! The Archaic Golfer is a dedication/tribute to all those times of my youth and to all the older golfers out in the world that play golf because they love golf. They love the camaraderie, the challenge of being outside in all types on conditions and hitting that perfect shot. I also dedicate this to my granddaddy for giving me the joy of this incredible game. I hope you will come along on my journey as I attempt to honor the past and the present where millions of golfers over the age of 50 play golf because they love it.
